Law Day is held annually on May 1 and is a day for celebrating the rule of law in the United States of America. It’s an excellent opportunity to understand how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. It was first established by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958 to demonstrate the nation’s commitment to the rule of law. Since then, it has been celebrated every year with a proclamation from the president. The theme of Law Day 2019 was “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”. This theme was selected to demonstrate how free speech and free press are the cornerstones of the open and representative government of the United States.
LEAP was proud to sponsor the Boston Bar Association’s 2019 Law Day Dinner, held on June 26, 2019, at Boston Symphony Hall. This year’s Law Day theme aligns with the values of LEAP, and we were proud to be a sponsor of this important event. In addition to being a great networking opportunity for attorneys and others in the legal profession, guests also enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, live music, and an extended cocktail hour.
Guests were also treated to a speech from Marty Baron, executive editor of the Washington Post. He spoke about the importance of truth prevailing in the press. The free and honest press is necessary for maintaining a free society. Newsrooms under Marty Baron’s leadership have won an incredible 14 Pulitzer Prizes, including seven in his current position at the Washington Post.
The other important business of the day was recognizing law firm Foley Hoag with the 2019 Thurgood Marshall Award. The BBA Thurgood Marshall Award is awarded each year to acknowledge attorneys in private practice in the Boston area of providing legal services to the low-income population. In a typical year, Foley Hoag attorneys handle over 400 pro bono matters that comprise over 22,000 hours of attorney time. Much of this pro bono work is for low-income Boston and Massachusetts residents, so their work aligns with the spirit of the award.
The Boston Bar Association’s 2019 Law Day Dinner was a unique experience that perfectly reflected the 2019 Law Day theme of “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”. We look forward to next year and hope you can join us.
